The hit anime from 2017, Made in Abyss, is getting a video game adaptation. The announcement was made in a post by developers Spike Chunsoft.
In it, they said that the game will be an action RPG and will be coming to the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
The game’s official title is Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness… whatever that means.
Before we go on about the game, let’s talk a little about what Made in Abyss is and why you should care.
Made in Abyss was originally a dark fantasy manga by Akihito Tsukushi which has been publishing on WEB Comic Gamma since 2012. (It’s still ongoing.) It received a much-loved anime adaptation in 2017 with a 13 episode season.
The story of Made in Abyss is about a girl who lives in a town built on the edge of a circular sinkhole kind of thing which goes deep into parts unknown. This is the titular Abyss.
The Abyss is filled with ancient ruins, technology, environmental hazards, and tons of truly horrifying monsters. Think Monster Hunter, but even more dangerous. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes.
A chance encounter with a young robot-like boy sets the girl off on an epic (and terrifying) adventure into the depths of the Abyss and towards horrifying truths about her world that honestly, children probably shouldn’t know.
What made this series a hit, both as a manga and as an anime is how it juxtaposes a dark and terrifying story with a cute and wholesome artstyle.
These characters are so cute that they wouldn’t be out of place on Animal Crossing: New Horizon or one of the Atelier games. But instead of chilling on the beach or mixing potions with friends, they are forced to take on monsters that look like Monster Hunter bosses and act like Dark Souls bosses.
The story isn’t all doom and gloom though. Despite the horrors the kids find the Abyss, there is also great beauty. Throughout their journey, we see surreal and beautiful landscapes, both natural and man-made (probably?) that evoke a sense of discovery and wonder similar to games like Shadow of the Colossus or Breath of the Wild.
All of that to say that with this new game, it appears that we will get to dive deep (no pun intended) into the world of Made in Abyss and explore it. We will get to take on those horrifying monsters and discover those magnificent sights.
According to the developers, the game will feature a story mode that lets you play through the story of the manga/anime or go through an original story written with input from the creator of the manga himself. Many characters from the show are also slated to return.
