The Xbox first party developer, Double Fine has revealed that their upcoming game, Psychonauts 2 will have an invincibility mode. This mode can be toggled on or off because the studio believes that “all people should be able to game”.
This revelation was made after the official account of Xbox tweeting that “beating the game on the lowest difficulty is still beating the game”.
Double Fine quoted the original tweet and said that beating Psychonauts 2 with the invincibility toggle on is still beating the game.
They went on to add, and we quote, “All people should be able to enjoy games. All ages, all possible needs. It’s an ongoing and important process for our industry and a challenge we need to met [sic]. End of the day? We want you to have fun, to laugh, to experience a story that affects you. On whatever terms you want.”
The real cherry on top of the whole thing is a jokey tweet Double Fine made that makes fun of the kind of gatekeeping mentality we see online from certain types of players. Take a look:
The issue of difficulty in games has been a hot button topic for some years now. Some argue that adding an easy mode to games devalues the experience of learning and growing to complete it. Others argue that players should have options to engage with games and that an optional easy mode does not impact the experience of those who would never use it.
Definitely a topic worth further discussion. Regardless, Psychonauts 2 comes out on 25 August, 2021 on Xbox Series consoles, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5.
