Netflix Replaces the Witcher’s Henry Cavill

Netflix recently announced that the Witcher will be back for a fourth season, but that the role of Geralt of Rivia will be played by Liam Hemsworth instead.

According to this tweet made by the official Twitter account of the Witcher show, Cavill will return to the role for season 3 but will be “handing his swords” to Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt.

Netflix also shared a statement by each actor. In Cavill’s one, he says the following:

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.

Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

While in Liam Hemsworth’s statement, he says the following:

“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.

Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Looking at the fan reception to this, it has been a mix of confusion and anger. Cavill got a considerable amount of support for his portrayal of the character so many are sad to see him go.

However, considering the fact that Cavill is returning to work with WB on the DCEU film franchise in the role of… well… you know, perhaps his departure from the Witcher show is no surprise.

We look forward to seeing what Hemsworth brings to the character and the show but that might not be for a while yet.
